seek for a real master

I Woke up with the knowledge that we gone to cross the Chinese border today.

In Ulan Bator the capital of Mongolia we had a stop for around 4h one day before. It was allowed to leave train and I decide to walk around a bit. The temperature on this day minus 25 and I walked fast to warm up a bit. After a while I saw a lot of people who were entering an old house. Curious I was following them to see what is happen there. Inside a queue waiting to get served with hot soup and a peace of dark bred. They did not have to pay for it, I mean the food was for free and how the people were looking like their would not have money at all. It was kind of public canteen for free food. After all the days this chicken meals I decide to line up to have taste from what the people were eaten. Of course most all were looking at me with my modern western clothes and were pointing during whispering to each other. I took my soup and the wet dark bread sit down and start to eat. For me was the taste quite ok after all the chicken stuff for 7 days on the train. The fatty soup was warming me quite fast. I went back to the waiting train happy for the change of food I had. All the time I tried to have a deep breath to fill my lungs with fresh air before I was entering the train again. The malodor inside the train was unbelievable because we could still not any window. Outside even with this cold climax was a paradise for the lung.

Mongolia_s

After breakfast I was looking all time out of the window. Nothing special to see since days hahaha only white until the horizon. Somehow I hope something will change when we coming closer to the Chinese border. Of course not. The train was slowing down its speed and then it was stopping at Zamin Uud a small border town. I could see now Chines soldier because we were at boarder to China now. After pass control and the change of the restaurant waggon the train starts its journey again around two hours later.

China here I´m ! Now my really seek for a master can start. But of course first I went to the new restaurant waggon. What I saw and smelled was keeping my mouth wide open.

Daoist practice of everlasting life…

The way of everlasting life is a main focus of daoist practice. To go along this attitude the daoist practice are quite many depends on the school the adept is following. But the philosophy is the same. Everlasting life means not the bodily aspect. The name Immortal is for many people confusing and leads to wrong action if deeper understanding is missing.

Here are few examples for a better understanding about daoist exercises. The text is written by Xu Congshi, disciple of Wei Boyang.

The three jewels, the real crux

The ear,the eye, the mouth- these three jewels,

block and stop them up,do not let them gape.

The truth in man lies at the very depths,

He roams wide yet guards a proper compass within.

Sight and hearing are both crooked and winding,

They function entirely together

As the pivot and lynchpin or the self,

Their movement never exhausted.

Bank up and guard the sight within,

Do not employ the ears in hearing,

Close the mouth to chattering,

With rare words out of the teeming void.

These three are the crux of the affair-

To be with a relaxed body, resting in an empty room,

Abandon the will and return to the void,

And without thinking thus find constancy.

Let signs of difficulty promote your change,

And preserve one mind without rebelling:

In bed the spirit cradled in your arms,

Alive and alert to its care or neglect.

It identifies the three keys to the inner development of an Elexir- the ear, the eye and the mouth. They correspond to the internal vitality or body essences:

Jing > body essence

Qi > vital energy

Shen > Spirit

During one`s cultivation lowering down the sensory organs. Means just reacting less or even not (mastership) of whats going on. The meaning is not to become a stone the meaning is to stay focused and relaxed within the body whatever is coming across. If you stay in this state of mind the so called “Golden Elexir” get created. This can be done because the mind stays calm all the time and you are beyond the point where Yin and Yang gets created. Not only in meditation you should get this point, no also during the hole daily action it is also called: “Refining the Elexir or Inner alchemy”

seek for a real master…the journey

Only two days left toward to the Chinese border. After five days on the transsiberian train I´m used now to all kind of chicken dishes they were offering beside nothing else. During looking out of the train window I was dreaming to become a chicken. A old german song came to my mind: “ich wollt ich wär ein Huhn…” Suddenly one of my cabin member was tipping on my shoulder and was asking to join in for lunch. I start a big laugher. At the train restaurant we had chicken soup together followed by fried chicken breast. The restaurant service always asking for dollars for the payment and my small money notes were close to be empty. I still had a lot a lot of rubles currency left after my red square black market money changing  and KGB experience. Asking to pay the double price but in ruble currency the service always shaking head to show the no go. The other restaurant guests from the USSR could pay in ruble but the five tourists on the train had to pay in one dollar notes. After lunch we went to an other famous place. The place were the samovar was steaming. In every second wagon was one and it was also a good place for a chat with others while drinking black tea.

Samowar_s

The colorful queue from different cultures in front of  samovar was a kind of meeting point for many who want to get in contact with others and to change information or for examples cigarettes. I was the one who get ask most to change cigarettes because I had tobacco to roll and most all smokers like to have a taste of it. To smoke we had to move to the space between the wagons. Between four and five people could stand there and the air was within seconds full of smoke. Full covered with thick clothes hand in the pockets cigarettes between the lips and the woolly down till eyebrows. The hole body was shivering while crossing meanwhile Siberia. Our smoking ritual became quite short because the temperature at the space between wagons was at least minus 30 degrees. Not even the warm smoke you could feel within the lungs and you got the feeling during breathing out ice cubes falling out of your mouth. After finishing we went always back to the samovar to get a cup hot water for warming our hands and body. I got somehow the impression that collective suffering makes it easier to become friends. Between chicken soup, tea from samovar, smoking in minus degrees and was at least 1-2h  learning Chinese language from a book as well to learn how to handle the chopsticks by fishing single nuts from a box. This was how the days and hours were passing by. Ones or twice a day the train were stopping at stations from cities or villages I never heard about. This was good opportunity to leave the train for few minutes. Like an animal at the Zoo I was running up and down along the platform to move and stretch my body and breath as deep and much as possible the cold fresh air in my lung. Inside the train it the smell was really nauseous. The people of course me as well had no chance to take shower only the small washbasin with icy water from the tap, brhhhh, the hole train was smelling like a Puma cage with no possibility to open windows. Running up and down the platform with bodily gymnastic as much and long as possible were the big highlights every day. Fill lung with fresh air and moving all joints how beautiful such things can be. Until the last whistle of train conductor I was enjoin jumping, running, slide on snow and ice, gymnastic and breath deeply. Around 4pm it starts to get dark in Siberia and the snow white wide landscape changed into a really. A further day was over and only one and half left to enter China border.

Nondualistic Mentality

All of the dualities of live are mutually depend and mutually necessary. Here the quote about from Laotse in:

Tao Te Ching (21-2) In the world, everyone recognize beauty as beauty, since the ugly is also there. Everyone recognize goodness as goodness, since evil is also there.

Laotse_s

When one searches only for beauty one stigmatizes the ugly. When people see beauty as pure beauty they view the ugly disparagingly. In valuing the good as purely good their judgement is based upon the idea of bad. But the universal manifests through the division of two from one, each depends on its opposite. So what ? One exist because the opposite exist ! If one would not exist the other would also not exist. Mhhhh, then it would be no separation no judgement means paradise, Shangri-La, nirvana, heaven or Wuji like the daoist are saying.

seek for a real master….the journey

Laying in cabin on my bed with folded arms and was thinking about the motivation why I started the journey to the east. Thinking I mastered already the martial art Ju Jutsu was the youngest man with third Dan master degree at that time in Germany. Competing around 150 times and was loosing only four or five time. Something was missing something was not complete this was my internal feeling.

Baikalsea in Winer_s

Frozen Balkai Sea view from the train window”

I read about the masters in past from Asia who had so much different skills beside the fighting aspect.  At the TV was running series Kung Fu with David Carradine. Grashopper and the conversation with his blind master very inspiring. In that series I was hearing first time about the Shaolin and their high level Kung Fu and their history. Actually the hole 70´s until mid 80´s was full of Kung Fu movies and books and also not to forget to name Bruce Lee who was opening the eyes for the westerner about the Chinese culture. My teenager time and my twenties full of influence of Kung Fu even some music hits like “Everybody is Kung Fu fighting” from Carl Douglas were entering the music charts. Before Kung Fu only Judo, Karate or Aikido was known in Europe. These are all Japanese styles now the time of the Chinese style had come. The arts of the Samurais and Ninjas was now exchanged to Konfutse and Laotse or for the  warrior monks of Shaolin. Years I was storing the money for the journey to the east to China. Now only two and half days left to enter the mysterious China. At that time still under the regency of hard communist leaders. With this thoughts and the typical sound of the train I was falling to sleep. Only two and a half days forward and I will be in the country were want to find my real master. I felt a bit sorrow for the travelers in my cabin because they just want enter China as tourist and to make photo shoots.

External enemies…

In Chinese medicine is a saying:

If your internal defense (Qi/vital energy )is strong and flowing no external enemy can strike you.

It sounds quite martial but its only a kind of view. And the so called not educated people in ancient China could understand its terminology easily.

External enemies:

  • Cold
  • Heat
  • Wind
  • Dryness
  • Dampness

These nature aspects of course not by it self enemies only if they can enter into your body. Then they can create so called blockages or in other words health problems. To prevent this it is necessary to keep our guard strong so these enemies can not enter the body. Several ways exist to keep the guard (defense Qi) strong. Here are some examples  from the classical wisdom of ancient china.

  • Live with nature rhythm
  • Exercises: Qi Gong / Chi Kung / Taijiquan
  • Food: 5 Element diet
  • Emotions: Keep them calm and balanced

crane tusche_s

Crane is symbolizing long life and immortality in Chinese culture.

Each of the listed ones has its own benefit but all the together they are a quite strong army against the so called external enemies. Each individual of them are to strengthen our defense Qi i.e. the guard. All together they build a strong army. This is the secret of a healthy life but the knowledge by itself not very helpful better start to bring it into your daily action. If you don´t you are the owner of death knowledge….

Treating with food an old tradition in Chinese culture

About the importance of eating and cooking in Chinese culture you can read in “Huang Dii Nei Jing”, Yellow Emperor´s Inner Classic. There is a saying medicine and food share the same origin. Difference between food and medicine actually does not exist only the way when you gone take it makes its difference: “Taking when hungry it is food eating when suffering its medicine” If you are able to have a good balanced food it is like  you treat diseases before it arises. This is the main message of Sun Simiao a famous daoist healer in Chinese culture. Master Sun create the “Yangshen”  nurturing live where the dietetics plays a main rule beside herbal medicine and bodily energy exercises (Qi Gong). Sun Simiao is also the founder of the famous  Qi Gong “Five animal play” (Wu Qin Xi). Sun Simiao statement of medical intervention offers some general ideas and rules about the effects of vegetable, grains fruits and animals substances on the human body.

Perfect control of Tiger and Dragon (Yin/Yang) the great Sun Simiao is showing:

Sun Simiao

Sun Simiao advises on dietetic :

The reason for the presence of increased sickness in the body is always related to the excessive consumption of cold substances and by immoderate eating and drinking in the spring and summer. Furthermore, fish, minced fish, and malodorous and cold substances mostly harm a person. To stop taking them is of great benefit. Frequent consumption of milk, koumiss, and similar substances gives a person strength in the sinews, great courage, and a body glistening with health. But if eaten in excess, they can also cause upper abdominal distention and diarrhea and gradually cause damage.

If we can avoid harm, there is no need for toxic drugs or harsh interventions because disease will never break out in the first place. Of course you have to understand he meaning of five element food their action to come to reach the points like the advices are showing.

An other quote of the great Daoist Sun Simiao:

Cultivate disposition to preserve health

Winter retreat…

Yes, the winter is the time to retreat. This is living with the nature in daoist way. But not only in the daoist philosophy the western people had done the same. To cold outside on the fields nothing to do. Staying home and preparing the working tools for the coming spring when the field work will start again.

winter romantik_s

Time to have rest to talk and exchange more as usual with family members and reading books as well go earlier to bed. This is like it should be in winter time. Today the most people make no different between the seasons because no need they thinking. Working as much sleeping same hours like usual. They gonna miss a period of energy charging who is needed for body, energy (Qi) and mind. One reason for the spring tiredness. The human did not get the needed rest in winter. Drinking tea, reading book with a candle light many dreaming of it but the most do not bring in to action. I hope you are not one of these people and wish a recreative winter time. Stay relaxed and happy….

best autumn actions….

Still autumn and it is good to understand what is the best action according to the nature flow of energy. Just back from Moscow where I was conducting following workshop:”The ancient wisdom of Taoists about living with the nature”.The seasonal module autumn and winter”. The attendees where very pleased about the deep knowledge of the ancient taoists philosophy. Actually all their wisdom and knowledge is from observation and very important by own experience from their daily practice. The daoist practice has quite a wide range depending which daoist school the students were following. It can be Chi Kung/ Qi Gong and or different ways of meditation and diet. In comparison to scientists who starting with a postulate and later they try to confirm it by tests and formulas. Ok now let say the daoist master was getting very sensitive because of his practice. He was writing down his experienced knowledge and thousands of practitioner later where confirming it or adjusting it according to their. Thousands of years experiencing and adjusting of taoists masters was making a very deep profound insight.

four seasons

  • Autumn is related to metal
  • Metal quality is structure> action – reorganize
  • Taste > spicy > action eat more of it
  • Emotion > sorrow > action more laughing
  • Organ > Lung > action breathing exercises or Lung Qi Gong

If we look at that not complete list we can see about some of these experienced facts, actions and directions. Following the information of this list means eat more spicy food to strengthen the lung. More laughing as a counterpart of the emotion sorrow not to get the so called autumn depression. Do some breathing exercises in the nature and special Qi Gong for the lungs. According to the metal quality of structure you should reorganize and clean and release. What to reorganize ? Your desk for example or your computer; delay what you should have done already long time ago. Even for your wardrobe it is a good time to reorganize, donate your clothes you didn´t wear long time. To do all this in autumn time creates a good energy for you, means is good for your health and vitality only by following the nature.
